The PRO3+ Process – Cast Iron with Optimized Patina

What is PRO3+?

PRO3+ is a special, registered process by the BBQ-Toro brand for treating and seasoning cast iron products. The goal of this process is to create a particularly robust and high-quality patina, so that cast iron items are optimally protected and ready for use from the very first use.

The process was specially developed by BBQ-Toro to make cooking and grilling with cast iron even more enjoyable. To better understand the advantages, it is worth taking a brief look at the conventional production of cast iron products first.


Conventional process "Preseasoned"

With conventional preseasoned cast iron products, the iron is first cast and then further processed.

In a next step, the product is treated with a vegetable oil (often soybean oil) and then heated. The oil combines with the surface of the cast iron and forms a so-called patina.

This patina:

  • protects cast iron from rust
  • provides the typical dark coloring
  • improves non-stick properties

After this process, the products are already usable. However, the patina is usually still relatively thin at the beginning and only develops further with regular use and care.

The PRO3+ process

The PRO3+ process extends this process and consists of three consecutive steps:

  1. First seasoning process
    As with the classic method, the cast iron is first treated with vegetable oil and seasoned.

  2. Additional seasoning step
    This is followed by another seasoning process with a specially developed method to further strengthen the patina.

  3. Final seasoning process
    In the last step, the seasoning process is repeated to create a particularly stable protective layer.

The result is a stronger and more even patina, which often only develops after longer use with conventionally pre-treated cast iron.

Visual differences

Products treated with the PRO3+ process already show some discernible differences upon delivery:

  • deep black surface
  • smoother texture
  • finer surface

These properties ensure that the cast iron already has very good cooking and frying properties from the start.

Advantages of the PRO3+ process

The PRO3+ process offers several practical advantages for using cast iron products:

  • particularly robust patina
  • improved protection against rust
  • better non-stick properties
  • reduced maintenance
  • faster readiness for use

This means that cast iron products can be used directly and already offer good cooking and frying properties from the outset.
