Rösti waffles from the grill

Crispy side dish from the waffle iron

When you need a quick and easy side dish for your BBQ, hash browns from the waffle iron are a brilliant solution. Golden brown and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside – and ready in just a few minutes.

It works especially well in a Belgian waffle iron with a slightly larger gap between the plates. Whether it's a grill, fire bowl, or rocket stove – the main thing is even heat.

Ingredients

  • Frozen hash brown patties or potato triangles

  • a little heat-resistant oil

Optional:

  • coarse salt

  • paprika powder

  • rosemary

Preparation

1. Prepare the waffle iron

Brush the waffle iron generously with oil.

Preheat over medium heat – indirect heat or even embers are ideal.
Do not place directly into strong flames.

👉 Use grill gloves – the entire iron gets very hot.

2. Place the hash browns

Place the frozen hash browns into the hot waffle iron.

Close the waffle iron and place it back on the grill or over the embers.

3. Bake

Baking time: 7–10 minutes, depending on the heat.

Turn the iron regularly so that both sides brown evenly.

👉 Important: Don't open it too early. Only when hardly any steam is escaping and a roasted aroma can be smelled, carefully check. This way, nothing sticks.

Serving

Sprinkle with a little salt or paprika powder and serve immediately.

Perfect with:

  • Steak or burger
  • Grilled vegetables
  • Dips like sour cream or aioli

💡Heat Tip

  • Optimal is about 180–200 °C indirect heat.
  • Too much heat will burn the hash browns on the outside while they are still frozen on the inside.
