Cooking over an open fire has always held a special fascination.
Sitting together by a crackling fire while a warm meal slowly cooks in the pot combines relaxation with a touch of adventure. Outdoor cooking brings people together and makes every meal a special experience.
In this article, we give tips for cooking on a fire pit with a Dutch Oven, show preparation options and provide inspiration for outdoor cooking.
Cooking on the fire pit – how it works
A flat fire bowl is excellently suited as a safe cooking area for the Dutch Oven. First, a small fire is lit in it.
It's best to stack a few firewood logs in a log cabin shape, so that enough air can circulate between the wood pieces. This makes the fire burn more evenly and develop embers more quickly.
For lighting, barbecue lighters or firelighters are suitable. Once the first logs have burned down to embers, the Dutch Oven can be placed in or above the embers.
To keep the heat constant while cooking, smaller pieces of wood or logs are regularly added. These ignite from the existing embers and ensure even heat.
Alternatively, the Dutch Oven can also be operated with charcoal briquettes. This method allows for a more controllable temperature. The fire pot can also be used on a grill or gas grill.
The right Dutch oven size for a family
Anyone who has cooked with a Dutch Oven will quickly discover the versatility of the cast iron pot. Many outdoor fans acquire several sizes over time, as different dishes require different pot sizes.
For a family of four, for example, a Dutch Oven with a volume of about 7 liters, such as the DO9P model, is suitable. This allows for the easy preparation of larger portions – for example, soups, stews, or braised dishes.
With a volume of around 7.2 liters, the pot offers enough space to prepare several portions at once. The lid can also be used as a frying pan, for example, for searing meat or vegetables.
