A Dutch oven is a versatile cast iron pot that, with proper care, can last for many years or even decades. Seasoning, cleaning, and storage are particularly important to ensure the Dutch oven functions optimally and remains rust-free. With a few simple steps, your Dutch oven will stay in good condition for a long time.

Seasoning the Dutch oven
Before first use, untreated cast iron products should be seasoned. This creates a patina , a natural protective layer of seasoned oil. This protects the Dutch oven from rust and makes it less likely that food will stick.
First, the Dutch oven is cleaned with hot water and thoroughly dried. Then, the pot is lightly rubbed with a neutral-tasting vegetable oil, such as coconut oil, rapeseed oil, or sunflower oil.
Alternatively, special care products for cast iron can be used, for example DOPFHELD – the Dutch oven seasoning and care oil or DOPFWUNDER – the Dutch oven seasoning and care paste . These products are specially developed for the care of cast iron and are suitable for both seasoning and regular maintenance.
A kettle grill or an oven is suitable for seasoning. The Dutch oven is heated upside down at about 200°C for approximately one hour . The heat causes the oil to bond with the surface of the cast iron, forming a protective patina.
After cooling, excess oil can be removed with a cloth. Over time, the protective layer will improve even further with use.
Many modern Dutch ovens come pre-seasoned and can be used immediately. However, additional seasoning can be beneficial to further enhance the protective layer.

Cleaning and care
After cooking , hot water and a brush or wooden scraper are usually sufficient for cleaning. Stubborn food residue can generally be removed without any problems.
Avoid using harsh cleaning agents or strong dish soap, as these can damage the patina. If dish soap has been used, the Dutch oven can be lightly oiled afterward and re-seasoned if necessary.
After cleaning, the pot should be thoroughly dried . Then, the surface can be lightly rubbed with DOPFHELD seasoning and care oil or a small amount of DOPFWUNDER care paste . This maintains the protective layer and provides additional protection against rust.
After outdoor use , ash or charcoal residue should also be removed from the lid and pot , as moisture in combination with ash can promote rust formation.
Proper storage
Before storing, it is recommended to lightly rub the Dutch oven with cooking oil or a care product such as DOPFHELD or DOPFWUNDER . This provides additional protection for the surface against moisture.
A piece of kitchen paper inside helps absorb excess moisture. The lid should not be completely closed to allow air to circulate.
This ensures that the Dutch oven remains well protected even during longer storage and is always ready for the next outdoor cooking experience.
