Vegan Campfire Dish for Grill & Outdoor Cooking
Cooking over an open fire is becoming increasingly popular – and for good reason. Simple dishes taste particularly intense outdoors in nature. A true classic of outdoor cuisine is chili con carne. But the meat-free version can be just as hearty and aromatic.
This Chili sin Carne from the Fire Pan is an uncomplicated campfire recipe with beans, vegetables and spicy flavors. It's quick to prepare and perfect for camping, garden parties or a cozy evening by the fire.
Ingredients (approx. 3–4 servings)
3 small onions
2 cloves of garlic
1 small chili (seeded to taste)
8 mushrooms
2 tomatoes
1 large can of kidney beans
1 small can of corn
3 tbsp tomato paste
4 tbsp vegetable oil
½ tsp paprika powder (sweet)
½ tsp dried rosemary
Salt and pepper
Optional:
½ tsp cumin or chili powder for more chili flavor
Preparation
1. Prepare ingredients
- Finely chop onions, garlic, and chili
- Quarter mushrooms
- Dice tomatoes
- Rinse kidney beans and corn in a sieve
2. Heat the fire pan
Light a campfire and let a stable bed of embers form.
Place the cast iron pan over the embers and heat the oil in it.
3. Sauté the base
Add onions, garlic, and chili to the hot pan and sauté until translucent for 2–3 minutes.
Add tomato paste and roast briefly to develop the roasted aromas.
4. Add vegetables
Add mushrooms and sauté for about 5 minutes until lightly browned.
Then stir in the diced tomatoes.
5. Cook the chili
Add kidney beans and corn.
Stir in paprika powder, rosemary, salt, and pepper.
If necessary, add a little water or vegetable broth so that the chili gets a nice consistency.
Let the chili simmer gently for about 10–15 minutes until the flavors are well combined.
6. Serve
Serve the chili hot from the fire pan.
Goes particularly well with:
- crusty bread
- baguette or flatbread
- rice
- tortilla chips
Tip
The cast iron fire pan is not only suitable for campfires.
It can also be used on the grill, gas stove, induction hob, or in the oven, making it a versatile piece of cookware for indoors and outdoors.
