Juicy, flavorful & surprisingly savory
This burger will win over more than just veggie fans. The homemade patty made from kidney beans and oats is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside – and topped with fresh vegetables, it's a true taste sensation.
Perfect for your next barbecue or as a meat-free alternative during the week.
Ingredients (for 4 burgers)
For the patties:
-
1 can kidney beans (approx. 240 g drained weight)
-
1 carrot
-
150 g rolled oats
-
1 red onion
-
2 eggs
-
1 tsp paprika powder (sweet or smoked)
-
½ tsp cumin
-
1–2 tbsp oil for frying
For the burgers:
-
4 brioche burger buns
-
4 slices of cheese (e.g., cheddar or gouda)
-
Lettuce leaves
-
¼ cucumber
-
1 tomato
-
Ketchup & mayonnaise
-
Butter for toasting
Preparation
1. Preparation
Rinse kidney beans in a sieve and drain well.
Coarsely mash with a fork – it's okay to have small pieces remaining.
Grate carrot coarsely (set aside ¾ for the patty mixture, ¼ for burger topping).
Halve the onion:
- Finely dice one half (for the patties)
- Slice the other half into rings (for the topping)
2. Prepare the patty mixture
Mix in a bowl:
- Mashed kidney beans
- Oats
- Eggs
- Grated carrot
- Finely diced onion
- Paprika powder
- Cumin
- Salt & pepper
Mix everything well.
The mixture should be formable. If it's too soft, add 1–2 tablespoons of oats.
Form 4 equally sized patties.
For better stability, let them rest in the refrigerator for 15–20 minutes.
3. Grilling or Frying
Fry patties over medium heat (approx. 180 °C) in a pan or on a griddle for 4–5 minutes per side.
After flipping, place cheese on top and let it melt briefly (with a burger cloche or lid).
Cut burger buns, butter the insides, and toast until golden brown.
4. Assemble the burger
Spread ketchup & mayonnaise on the bottom bun.
Top with:
-
Lettuce
-
Cucumber slices
-
Tomato slices
-
Grated carrot
-
Onion rings
Place the patty on top and close with the lid.
💡Tip
For extra freshness:
A squeeze of lemon juice or some yogurt dip goes perfectly.
If you prefer more flavor, add mustard or BBQ sauce.
A vegetarian burger that doesn't taste like deprivation – but like real indulgence.
